Building a Mystery: Writing Poems that Fathom
September 7-October 5, 2026 (4 Weeks, Async)
While it’s conventional wisdom to “write what you know,” often the most powerful poems can draw us into great Unknowns. In this class, we’ll talk about poems that grapple with different kinds of mystery, and consider how particular craft techniques (including diction, structure, prosody, white space) are deployed to help them fathom past ordinary understanding.
Looking at poems by Larry Levis, Lucille Clifton, C.D. Wright, and others, we’ll discuss writing at the intersection of mystery and memory; enigmas of the natural world; secrets of sleep, mythic dreams, and the unconscious; and attempts to enact instability on the page. Poets will leave the course with four new drafts, for which they’ve received thorough, supportive critiques. Workshop, craft discussions, a range of prompts, and optional bonus readings will provide further ways to explore strangeness and the untellable.
Format: Async, Wet Ink group workshop

Ghosts and Dreamspace: Writing Poems that Haunt and Bewilder
Thursday, October 22, 6-8pm EDT (Virtual)
While poets are often instructed to make a poem’s world convincing and “real,” some of the most memorable poems pull us deeper into mysterious realms, without becoming so cryptic that we lose our way. How do they manage it, this haunting world-building, in such a brief lyric space? In this two-hour, virtual generative session, we’ll look at how defamiliarization and figurative landscapes can captivate readers. We’ll discuss poems that use repetition and variation, and make moves with diction, soundwork and the line, to produce uncanny effects, and turns that are both moving and unsettling. Then we’ll take a crack at our own haunting drafts, using these approaches to explore our own dreamspaces.
